but wait until you see Detroit’s!

A transformation is underway on Detroit’s International Riverfront. There will soon be a scenic walkway from bridge to bridge. 2007 is the banner year for construction all along the river. At year’s end, close to 75% of the east RiverWalk will be complete. Two plazas and pavilions – at Rivard Street and Gabriel Richard Park – are scheduled to be completed.

Highlights:

• The harbor portion of the new Tri-Centennial State Park & Harbor opened in May 2004. This represents the first phase of Michigan’s first urban state park. The rest of the park will be designed and constructed in phases.

• In June 2004, a ground-breaking ceremony took place for the new Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority terminal and dock.

• In December 2004, the grand opening of GM’s $25 million plaza and promenade took place. This marked the opening of a half mile of brand new RiverWalk adjacent to the Renaissance Center.

• Construction is underway continuing the walkway on Harbortown’s border.

• The Detroit Riverfront Conservancy rolled out a vision for the west riverfront in 2004, resulting in a framework for continuation of the RiverWalk to the west, from the Civic Center Promenade to the Ambassador Bridge.

• Detailed designs have been finalized for four plazas and pavilions that will be constructed along the east RiverWalk. They will house concessions and restrooms as well as special features such as gardens, interpretive markers and playscapes.
